lucia micarelli

i interviewed Lucia Macarelli today. she’s best known as josh groban’s violinist and concert master. really gifted musical artist, with a long list of accomplishments you wouldn’t normally find from a woman as young as her. if you wanna see her in action, click here. she’s probably the oldest 24 year old i’ve ever met.
she was sleepy and exhausted from her concert at Embassy the night before. and she could just barely croak out her answers to our questions. but i only had to ask a few, because she’s the type of subject who readily volunteers answers to questions that you still have in your head, which makes her one of the best interviews i’ve had. the interview was a great eye-opener, not just into who Lucia is, but she gives incredible insights to life as well.
of course, i’m not going to give away all the interview here, i still have to write the article (and you can pick up the copy of 24/7 Nocturnal Navigator when it comes out) after all. but i want to share her answer (her shortest one) to my last question (before i had to unceremoniously run off to pick up my dad).

ME: So what goes on in your head during a performance? I’ve heard stories about your emotional performances, where does this emotion come from?
LUCIA: (her eyes started watering and she looks away). Sorry, I’m being too emotional.
ME: I’m sorry?
LUCIA: I’m grateful. (she gave me a watery smile and wiped her eyes. she muttered something about being too tired before giving me another wobbly smile.) I’m just grateful.
and i can’t tell you just how awesome to hear that, especially from somebody like her.
