il mare

I am in love with this movie.i liked it the first time i watched it in the company of my two equally sappy girl friends. i liked it even more when i watched it again a year after that, just last weekend with my sister. i guess the second time the movie came around, i was at the time when my heart is just longing to be somebody’s object of affection yet afraid to come into a relationship a mess that i am now. i want a quiet romance, and a cute guy like Sung Hyun.
Il Mare is such a quiet and beautifully shot film. the story telling was drawn out and subtle, just how i like it. it can be boring for some, but for this me, for this movie, it’s just right. i find it so restful to watch this it, and only wish that i could do something about the crappy subtitles with the typos and grammatical errors. i’m not gonna spell out the plot here anymore, just google the movie if you want. or just watch it.
if i were still a film student, i would have written a long paper about the film’s take on time, its narrative and how the ending makes a lot more sense when seen through discworld’s trousers of time theory.
i doubt that it would carry weight in the academic circles, but if you want to check out what i mean, read terry pratchett’s discworld novel the night watch and then watch il mare, it would make a lot more sense.
while Lake House is a so-so American version of Il Mare, it just pales in comparison with the latter’s quiet trust in the audience’s intelligence to follow a far-fetched premise and the original’s beautiful cinematography. i like it better when romance is not tinged with sexual tension, and a kiss is not needed to prove that a couple is in love with each other. and cola is a lot cuter than jack.
this says a lot with what i’m looking for now: a love based on respect and fondness for each other, a love that transcends physical intimacy, a love that communicates in silence, and a house on stilts by the sea.
